Mariupol, where the prisoners released were captured, among them Zhuravlev, suffered probably the most terrible blow of the first months of the full-scale war.
The city of half a million inhabitants was besieged and subjected to massive bombardments. Even the dramatic theater was destroyed by a powerful bomb deliberately dropped, because dozens of children and their mothers were hiding there. The streets of the city were covered with civilian bodies, and graves were dug directly into the courtyards and playgrounds.
Today this city remains under occupation, and we still do not know the true dimension of the tragedy and the crimes committed.
But another of these crimes was also the destruction of the “Borivíter” mosaic, the work of the well-known cultural and political activist of the 1960s Alla Horska.
Boriviter is a bird capable of staying in the air using the force of the contrary wind, and therefore has become a symbol of the resistance and firmness of the Ukrainian spirit.
Alla Horska herself and thousands of Ukrainian intellectuals were these boriviters, preserving under the Stalinist dictatorship, Ukrainian identity, dignity and an impressive cultural heritage. For this Horska was brutally murdered in 1970.
She left behind several monumental mosaics—brilliant calls to endurance and the joy of living a life full of struggle. They are true jewels of the world vanguard, hidden for decades by the chauvinist policy of Great Russia.
In the last years of independent Ukraine, her legacy finally became the heritage of the Ukrainian people. Until, in 2022, the Borivíter was damaged and captured by the Russian occupiers.
Last year the mosaic was restored, and today it is displayed in different cities and countries. Thus, the cultural heritage created by several generations of Ukrainian intellectuals and artists, supported by popular culture and history, today serves the struggle, inspiring the multitudinous Ukrainian resistance and the anti-colonial revolution.
And today hundreds of new boriviters — made of steel, plastic and explosives, guided by the internet — attack the capital of the counterrevolution: Putinist Moscow.
The rotten bubble of the Russian lie about the “great power” and the “second army of the world” is bursting at this very moment, plaguing the chauvinist Russia with its bad smell.
And within Ukraine itself, thousands of workers and activists of all ages continue to create more and more new Boriviters, willing to avenge three hundred years of Russian colonization, the tsarist and Stalinist crimes and the assassinations of Putin.
For every worker, activist and revolutionary, it will be a great honor to participate in this collective creation that builds a new just world, without empires and without wars.
