Today is the Memory Day of the deportation of Tartar People from Crimea. On that day, in 1944, under Stalin\u2019s order, an entire people was deported.<\/p>\n

In only few days, around 200,000 civilians were put by force in cargo wagons and sent to Central Asia, to the naked steppe, without any normal life conditions. The trains travelled during weeks. There was no water, no food or medicines. People died on the way. According to different estimates, around 10% of the Tartars from Crimea died only during the deportation. Other thousands had already died in exile, victms of hunger, diseases and inhumane conditions.<\/p>\n

The practice of deporting Non-Russian peoples was widely used by the Stalinist regime, especially during the Second World War. Particularly tragic was the destiny of Chechens, Ingushes, Circassians ant Tartars from Crimea. This way a space was opened to the russification of Caucasus and Crimea \u2013 through expulsions, repression and destruction of original peoples.<\/p>\n

But the destiny of the Tartars from Crimea was even more tragic. They were the only deported people from URSS to whom, even after Stalin\u2019s death and during the period of the limited democratization, was denied during a long time the right to return to their homeland.\u00a0 Crimea had fundamental militar strategic importance to the Soviet burocracy, as the main base of the Black Sea Fleet and as a fundamental militar platform, through which the Soviet Nomenklatura tried not only to maintain the control of the region, but also negotiate in the future advantageous conditions with the world imperialism aiming the capitalist restoration.<\/p>\n

It was precisely after the deportation of the Tartars from Crimea that appeared the mith that \u201cCrimea was always Russian\u201d. In fact, the Russian population was transferred massively to the Peninsula but only after the expulsion of the original habitants.<\/p>\n

The Tartars from Crimea were the legitimate owners of the Peninsula. They are people formed by multiple cultures and peoples from Crimea \u2013 from the Citas and ancient Greeks until the Genoese and Turkish tribes. Until the end of XVIII century, the Canato of Crimea existed, a State with developed culture, architecture and political tradition. Its rulers, direct descendants from Gengis Khan, were among the most respectful leaders in East Europe, and the Muscovite State paid a tribute to Crimea during a long time.<\/p>\n

The Tartar culture from Crimea is one of the jewels of Black Sea. Its architecture, music, ornaments and literature still impress because of their richness.<\/p>\n

The Tartar movement from Crimea became an important part of the democratic resistance in the URSS after 1944 and until 1991, closely related to the Ukrainian national democratic movement.<\/p>\n

Only after the fall of the PCUS dictatorship and the Declaration of Independence of Ukraine, the Tartars from Crimea could return massively to their homeland, even without recovering their properties and lands. So, the Tartars from Crimea became the only original people from Ukraine, beside the Ukrainians, whose historical homeland is entirely inside the Ukrainian territory.<\/p>\n

Remembering the horrors of the deportation, the majority of the Tartars from Crimea didn\u2019t accept the Russian occupation of Crimea in 2014. They participated in massive demonstrations, of the resistance and suffered new repressions.\u00a0 Unexpectadly even for many Ukrainians, it was precisely the Tartars from Crimea that, in the most russified region in Ukraine and previously prepared for a fast occupation who were the defenders of the Ukrainian National Liberating Revolution and its most advanced military deployment. Today, they are one of the most chased people inside Russia: hundreds of activists are in prison and thousands were obliged to leave their houses again and seek for refuge in the free part of Ukraine.<\/p>\n

Today, many Tartars from Crimea heroically fight in the ranks of Ukrainian Army, getting for the first time in many generations, the possibiity to fight in an organized way and with weapons\u00a0 in the hands for their homeland.<\/p>\n

What that remind us of?<\/strong><\/p>\n

First of all, the tragedy and the Palestinian people struggle. The imperialism and the imperialist ambitions always try to wipe out the small peoples.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s why a fundamental part of the program of any workers\u2019 party that intends to come to power, should be the freedom and Independence of all opressed nations. Alongside Palestinian people and Kurdish people, the international resistance program should also include the slogan of\u00a0 Crimea return to Ukraine, as a legitimate and fair demand of the Ukrainian Revolution and of the Tartars from Crimea.<\/p>\n
