They say, “not in our name” because it is not a confrontation between religions, Muslims against Jews, that has been going on for 78 years in Palestine.

That is a current verification of something that Palestinian exiles recount, of how in their childhood, before the Nakba, Jewish, Christian and Muslim children played together, without worrying about each other’s religion. Their parents were mostly poor peasants, all enduring the oppression of English colonialism, but they had no problems with each other. There was a difference between native Jews of the region (Sephardim) who were fully integrated, and European Jews (Ashkenazim) who had been introduced by Zionism (in agreement with British imperialism since the Balfour Declaration [1]) and who were armed settlers who disputed the land with the Palestinians.

Colonial oppression and exploitation were increasingly violent and Palestine was transformed into a boiling land that erupted in the 1936 revolution. From then on the British saw an important tool in the Zionist settlers. As Schoenman [2] puts it, “the Zionists offered them a unique resource that they had never had in any colony: a local force that made common cause with British colonialism and that was intensely mobilized against the indigenous population.”

Another great falsehood is that the construction of Israel was religiously motivated, “the return to the promised land” from which they were expelled, as Zionist propaganda says. The proof of this is that in Zionism different regions of the world were discussed to establish their territory, for example, Uganda and Argentine Patagonia.

Zionism, in rejecting the struggle for socialist revolution to solve the Jewish question, saw as the only way to end discrimination, to have its own territory that would unite all Jews around the world. But their proposals for many years were in the minority because the majority of Jews wanted to assimilate in their respective countries.

The situation of Zionism changed after the Nazi Holocaust and, fundamentally, with the refusal of European countries to take on the contingent of men and women who returned from the concentration camps with deep physical and psychological wounds.

Thus, in order to solve the “Jewish question” in their countries, the imperialist governments went on to support the Zionist proposal of “land for a landless people”.

To achieve their objectives for years, the Zionists collaborated with all imperialisms which, in turn, used them as a tool to defend their colonial interests, in which the British stood out first and finally the U.S. who, to this day, arm them to the teeth to guarantee that Israel is their gendarme in the Middle East.

Therefore, the creation of Israel was always a political issue, it never had a religious motive, even if that was the argument that the Zionists used to gain followers.

The Four Myths of Zionism

The Jewish-American intellectual and Marxist activist Ralph Schoenman speaks of the four myths on which Zionism is based:

1. A land without a people for a people without a land – when, in reality, “in 1947 there were 630,000 Jews and 1,300,000 Palestinian Arabs.” So at the time the United Nations divided Palestine, Jews made up 31% of the population. The decision to partition Palestine, promoted by the major imperialist powers and Stalin’s Soviet Union, gave 54% of the fertile land to the Zionist movement, but before the State of Israel was formed, the Irgun and the Haganah[4] seized three-quarters of the land and expelled virtually all the inhabitants.”[5]

2. Israeli democracy – “Countless news and references to the State of Israel on TV or in the press includes the catchphrase that it is the only “authentic” democracy in the Middle East. In reality, Israel is as democratic as apartheid in South Africa can be. Civic liberties, judicial procedures, and basic human rights are denied by law to those who do not meet racial and religious requirements.”[6]

3. Security – “The Zionists argue that their state has to be the fourth military power in the world because Israel has been forced to defend itself from the imminent threat of the primitive, hate-filled Arab masses that have just come down from the trees. ‘Security’ has been the slogan used to cover up the extensive massacre of civilian populations throughout Palestine and Lebanon, to confiscate Palestinian and Arab land, to expand into surrounding territories and build new settlements, to deport and systematically torture political prisoners.”[7]

4. Zionism as the moral heir of the victims of the Holocaust. “It is the most widespread and the most insidious of the myths of Zionism. The ideologues of this movement have wrapped themselves in the collective shroud of the six million Jews who fell victim to Nazi mass murder. The cruel and bitter irony of this false claim is that the Zionist movement maintained from the beginning an active collusion with Nazism.

“Most people find it strange that the Zionist movement, which always invokes the horror of the Holocaust, has actively collaborated with the bitterest enemy the Jews have ever had. However, history reveals not only a community of interests but a deep ideological affinity that is rooted in the extreme chauvinism they share.”[8]

That ideological affinity between Zionism and Nazism that Schoenman mentions has to do with the fact that the two movements share the theory of “purity of blood”, one is “the master race”, the other “the chosen people”. The Zionist leader Leev Jabotinsky, confronting the process of assimilation that was taking place among German Jews and defending his claims that the only solution to the Jewish question was to obtain a territory of his own, points out: “It is impossible for someone to assimilate to people who have a blood different from his own (…) there can be no assimilation. We must never allow things like mixed marriage because the preservation of national identity is only possible through racial purity and for this purpose we must have that territory in which our people will constitute the racially pure inhabitants.”[9]

And that doctrine became a policy of collaboration with the different imperialisms and, although it may seem incredible, also with the one led by Hitler. “The Zionist Federation of Germany sent a memorandum of support to the Nazi Party on June 21, 1933. It stated: ‘… a rebirth of national life such as that which takes place in German life… It must also take place in the Jewish national group.

On the basis of the new (Nazi) state which has established the principle of race, we wish to fit our community into the overall structure so that also for us, in the sphere assigned to us, we can develop fruitful activity for the Fatherland…’

“Far from repudiating this policy, the Congress of the World Zionist Organization of

1933, rejected by 240 votes to 43 a resolution calling for action against Hitler.”[10]

Throughout his work, Schoenman gives evidence of this collaboration of Zionism with the Nazi regime, being complicit in the suffering of the Jewish people, in order to gain support for its own state proposal. Some examples:

In 1933 a commercial agreement was made between the Anglo-Palestinian Bank of the World Zionist organization, with the German state, breaking the Jewish boycott of the Nazi regime.

In 1938, Ben-Gurion at an assembly of Labour Zionists in Britain, stated the following: “If I knew that it was possible to save all the children in Germany by taking them to Britain, and only half by transporting them to Erstz Israel, I would opt for the second alternative.”

As Schoenman says, the obsession with colonizing Palestine and being more than the Arabs, led the Zionist movement to oppose any rescue of Jews threatened with extermination, so that there would be no obstacles to the diversion of a select workforce to Palestine.

Thus, between 1933 and 1935, the World Zionist Organization rejected two-thirds of German Jews who asked for an immigration certificate. In that period the WZO had encouraged a plan for the emigration of Jews to Palestine with the argument of threats of extermination, but there were German Jews, too old to procreate in Palestine, without professional qualifications to build a Zionist colony, who did not speak Hebrew and who were not Zionists. Instead of those Jews threatened with extermination, the World Zionist Organization brought to Palestine six thousand young Zionists from the United States, Great Britain and other countries where there was no threat.

“In July 1944 the Slovak Jewish leader, Rabbi Dov Michael Weismandel, in a letter to the Zionist officials in charge of the ‘rescue organizations’ proposed a series of measures to save the Jews condemned to extermination at Auschwitz. He offered accurate maps of the railways and urged the bombing of the branch lines where Hungarian Jews were transported to the crematoria.

He called for the bombing of the ovens of Auschwitz, for the parachute of ammunition for 80,000 prisoners, for sappers to parachute in order to blow up all means of annihilation and thus put an end to the daily cremation of 13,000 Jews.

In the event that the Allies rejected the request, Weismandel proposed that the Zionists, who had funds and organization, should arrange for airplanes, recruit Jewish volunteers, and carry out sabotage.”[11]

As Schoenman explains, Weismandel was not the only one, in the late 1930s and 1940s, Jewish spokesmen for Europe called for help, public campaigns, organized resistance, demonstrations to force the Allied governments, the response was silence from Zionists. There was no bombardment of the furnaces by the Allies.

In July 1944, Weismandel wrote the Zionists a letter that said: “Why have you done nothing for us until now? Who is to blame for this terrible negligence? Are you not to blame, you Jewish brothers, who have the greatest luck in the world, freedom?

(…) Are you, Jewish brethren, children of Israel, mad? Don’t you know the hell that surrounds us? Who do you keep your money for? Murderers! Crazy! (…)[12]

After this Zionist action during World War II, it is not surprising that, in May 1935, Reihard Heydrich, head of the SS Security Service, wrote an article in which he divided the Jews into two categories, supporting the Zionist Jews, saying that: “They have our best wishes and our official goodwill.”[13]

These are the Zionists who claim to be the heirs of the Holocaust victims of the Jewish people. It may be hard to believe that these denunciations are not made by anti-Semitic figures, but by prestigious Jewish intellectuals. All these facts are amply documented in the book “Zionism in the Age of Dictators”[14] by Jewish-American writer Lenni Brenner and cited in “The Hidden History of Zionism” by the Jewish writer Ralph Schoenmen.

Zionism is not synonymous with Judaism. Zionism is synonymous with Nazi-fascism
Zionism not only shares the racist ideology of the Nazis, or collaborated with them, they incorporated their terrible methods of extermination used on Jews, now applied against the Palestinian Arab population.

That reality is what explains the deterioration of Zionism among young Jews, who today shout: Not in our name! and rise up against the criminal bombardment of Gaza, bombings that have the shameless support of the U.S., of the majority of the world’s governments and the complicity of the international press that multiplies the lying Zionist propaganda.

This reality is what explains the position of Jewish intellectuals such as Brenner and Shoenman, who have been denouncing these atrocities for some time, such as Israeli historian Illan Pappe, who has recently published an article justifying and vindicating the Palestinian resistance and its military counteroffensive of October 7.

Are we being anti-Semitic by comparing Zionism to Nazism?

Nahuel Moreno was asked a similar question and he responded as follows:

“The Zionist left accuses me of being anti-Semitic, especially because I maintain the need for the destruction of the Zionist state.

As a Marxist, I start from the premise that the proletariat of one nation that exploits and oppresses another, as Israel exploits and oppresses the Arabs and Palestinians, cannot liberate itself. The Jewish working class is heir to a glorious tradition in the class struggle: the path of the Western proletariat, including the Argentinean proletariat, is strewn with a multitude of heroic Jewish fighters. But this proletariat will not be able to continue to the end, nor will it be able to revive and overcome its glorious tradition, as long as it does not take the side of the Palestinians and the Arabs, who are repressed, persecuted and enslaved by the State of Israel. (…) The question to be answered with regard to the relations between peoples, races, nations and classes is very simple: who oppresses and who is oppressed? For a revolutionary Marxist the answer is as simple as the question: we are against the oppressors and for the oppressed. We defend the latter to the death, without ceasing to point out, when necessary, the errors of their leadership (…)”[15]

Another question that is currently being asked is whether one should have a policy towards the Israeli workers in the fight against the Zionist state. There are even those who justify their position of honoring Israel’s victims as part of a policy toward the Israeli working class. Moreno also responded to this, based on the question posed by a Chilean comrade:

“If the decisive and fundamental purpose is the destruction of the Zionist state, it is a question of establishing which are the objective forces that at this moment are embarked on this progressive, historic task, (…). Are the exploited and discriminated Sabas and Sephardim in Israel doing it? Or the Ashkenazi workers? At this moment, these forces are bulwarks of the Zionist state and not the vanguard of its destruction. The Ashkenazi labor aristocracy, through the Labor Party, is all in Zionism. The Sabas and Sephardim gave Begin the electoral base and enthusiastically support his plans for the colonization of Arab lands. This currently leaves the Arab and Muslim movement as the only social sector in permanent struggle against Israel, whose undisputed vanguard is the Palestinians, driven from their homeland by the Zionists.”[16]

Moreno’s response from 1982 is still correct today. That is why there can be no doubt about which is the right side of the story. As Ilan Pappé says in his recent article: “There is an alternative. In truth, there always was: a de-Zionized, free and democratic Palestine from the river to the sea; a Palestine that welcomes refugees back and builds a society that does not discriminate on the basis of culture, religion or ethnicity.”

And to achieve that alternative of “a single, secular, democratic and non-racist Palestinian state” the destruction of the Zionist State of Israel is necessary. The policy of “the two states living in peace” was the policy of partition made by the UN and was always unjust. Moreover, it is impossible, a reactionary utopia, in the face of the expansionist state of Israel that acts with the support and as spearhead of U.S. imperialism in the Middle East.

It may seem that this task is impossible to achieve, since it is a question of defeating the fourth military power in the world, which has the full support of the first, u.s. imperialism. It also seemed impossible that the u.s. would be defeated in Vietnam, but this was achieved with the combination of the heroic resistance of the Vietnamese masses, ready for anything, just like the Palestinian masses today, with international mobilization, especially in the United States. Currently, we are seeing how the U.S./Israel attack is being defeated in Iran; one more element that strengthens Ilan Pappé’s statement, that we are facing the beginning of the end of the state of Israel.

[1] The Zionists succeeded in wresting from British imperialism what they had been trying for a long time with the former colonizers (the Ottoman Empire and the German Empire). On November 2, 1917, the Balfour Declaration was published, which among other things said: “His Majesty’s Government welcomes the establishment in Palestine of a national home for the Jewish people and will do everything in its power to facilitate the realization of this objective…”

[2] Ralph Schoenman, who died on September 30, 2023, was one of the most prominent figures of the American Marxist left.
